Reading the news of bomb blasts in central London really left me really shocked on my way to work. Afterall, it had been only just hours from the annoucement that London will be hosting the Olympics in 2012. In my mind, I could picture the Londoners prancing about celebrating their victory throughout the night. The next day of bomb blasts would really change their euphoria to fear for their family and their own lives.
London has been a part of my fond memories. Their Tube stations, equivalent to our MRT stations, announced "Please mind the Gap", "Please mind the Step" and "Please mind ... (Can't remember)" left me really amused. The cranky-sounding Tube could sometimes be a hassle as the stations would update you on whether workers were on the strike and whether the lines are in "Good" operations. If they decide to strike, you would have to take alternative lines to travel to your destination. The travel up the escalators was an eye-opener of rules-abiding public who would really keep to a pencil-straight right side to allow the others in a rush to move up on the left side. This really brings our MRT's "Keep Left" campaign to a shame because most people don't care. Also, Singapore's shopping streets is really just a fraction of the shopping scene in London. Whatever stores that you want, just name it. They have more branded boutiques, bigger stores like Topshop, Mango and Zara, and big crazy sales went on everywhere which resulted in me couldn't stop shopping. Hee.. Marks and Spencer was huge, SO much larger than our local stores and they sell fresh food there. Wow. I also remembered visiting the famous historical buildings like Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, the Big Ben and Towers of London. Strangely, Big Ben is not a standalone tower but part of the Parliment House. I must have been under too much influence of Peter Pan. Hee.. The Towers of London showcased the intricately designed crowns of Queen Elizabeth, with the BIGGEST diamond I have ever seen in my whole life. Jaw-dropping. Awesome. The crown looked really heavy and I have to conclude that Queen Elizabeth must have a very strong neck. Haha.
As I recounted my memories, it really just seem like yesterday that I was in London. I really can't help but to feel sorrow for the people hurt in the bomb blasts which went off simultaneously according to the news. Imagine the explosions ripped through the carriages of the train. The amount of fear and paranoia caused to the passengers in the train is surely indescrible. As our country is a pro-advocate of US stance on the Iraq war, now I do feel the fear of the same thing happening right in our home. Everyday, the MRT is seriously packed during the peak hours. If something should happen (
Choi choi choi), not only will a fraction of the working population be reduced and I think we'll be at a loss of what to do because I believe that Singaporeans rely too much on the Government for everything. Too much passiveness prevails and complacency is really a danger. Our local news reported that uniformed guards patrol the MRT stations but I see none in the busy Orchard Road today. The thought of whether Orchard is safe did crossed my mind when I was out. Haha. I must be getting paranoia. Typical me. Hee.. Bleah~
After saying so much, I really hope that the victims will recover soon from all the trauma and injuries and Londoners can get on with their normal lives soon, so the people who only knows how to use violence to talk will know that they have failed.
World peace. This world seriously needs it. Badly.
